Retro Candy is Big in Britain

By Jennifer

In the U.K. confectioners are re-releasing older more traditional candies. Modern boutique candy makers have also been making more organic or fancier versions of the candies that U.K. citizens have been enjoying for hundreds of years.

A very British bubble gum is called Anglo Bubbly. If you grew up in the seventies and eighties in England than you will recognize the yellow and blue wrapper and the claim that “Bubbly Blows Bigger Bubbles!”  The gum itself is very fruity tasting.

A traditional favorite is Chocolate Coins. These are chocolate rapped in gold foil. They are sold in a set of six in a yellow or red netted bag. The chocolate is a waxy milk chocolate although some gourmet shops sell more high-end versions.

Pips are also popular in the country. Basically these are fruit flavored sweets made from boiled sugar. In the United Kingdom these chewy trots that are smaller than a jelly bean come in all kinds of interesting colors and flavors.  A popular flavor of pips in the U.K. is banana.

Cola Flavor millions are another very popular treat. These look like little nuggets of bubblegum. They are the color of beige beans. When you put them in your mouth they burst with cola flavor.

Flying Saucers are also a British classic. These are round hard wafer shells in outrageous colors like blue, pink and lime that are filled with sweet fruit flavored sherbert.

What we call Pop Rocks in America is Fizz Wizz in the U.K.. This is a powder that comes in a packet that can be either sweet or tart.  When it goes in your mouth it starts popping and fizzing on your tongue.

A candy known as Scented Satins is also very popular. These are boiled sweets that look like pearlescent little pyramids. They come sexy colors such as purple, peach, lime, bright blue and bright yellow.

Chewing nuts are also popular treat. These are thick hunks of caramel that are rolled in flakes are very light milk chocolate.   These are also sometimes called jawbreakers, as the toffee can be quite hard to chew.

Another chocolate treat from the U.K. are Brown Gems. These look like giant chocolate buttons. They are covered entirely on one side with little round multi-colored sprinkles. They are also sometimes called Jazz drops or Jazzies.

A very traditional British candy is Barratts Shrimps. These are flesh colored soft candies that are made from molds that look like crustaceans. However, unexpectedly they taste like juicy raspberry.
