The Famous British Farm at High Grove
As a “green” member of the Royal family Prince Charles was way ahead of his time. Attached to his residence near Edinburgh, Scotland called Highgrove was a farm he called the Home Farm. In 1986 he decided to operate this farm as an organic, sustainable form of agriculture.
Some of the amazing features of the Home Farm are the Rare Breed aspect. The Prince is Patron of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and keeps animals such as British White, Shetland, Gloucester and Irish Moiled cattle on the farm. The Prince also raises rare Large Black Pigs and Tamworth Pigs. Coltswold and Hebridean Sheep are also a feature at the farm.
The farm also offers unique organic products made by his brand Duchy Originals. The first product made was the Oaten Biscuit in 1992. The brand now also sells signature Rosemary and Thyme Oaten biscuits, Highland Shortbread and an extensive line of spreads including British Lemon Curd, Blackcurrant preserve and Duchy Originals Heather Honey. It also produces an interesting line of condiments including Wholegrain Mustard With Honey, Onion Marmalade, Harvest Chutney and Tomato Chutney.
Duchy Originals also makes its own apple cider. Hereford Reserve Dry Cider is a fruity, full bodied cider that is made with bittersweet orchard apples.
As would be expected of an organic farm with so many animals that can produce dairy products the farm sells organic yogurts including rhubarb and black currant flavoured yogurts. You can also purchase full cream milks and a unique cheddar cheese.
There are some very unique organic deserts offered at the farm including Gooseberry Posset With Elderflower, Lemon Curd Ice Cream, Treacle Tarts, Black Currant and Mint Sponge Pudding and Citrus Tortes. However the star of the show is the Cambridge Burnt Cream which is the Highgrove version of a packaged crème brulee.
The Farm also sells a range of 51 organic vegetable and herb seeds including Bolivar Beetroot, Calbrese Broccoli, Dundoo Courgetttes, Stuon Onions, Money Maker Tomatos and Picolino Cucumbers.
The farm also offers locals (people living within a ten mile radius) the privilege of ordering a food box full fresh, seasonal organic produce. Potatoes, carrots and onions are always part of the box along with what is seasonal and fresh such as lettuces, squashes, tomatoes, peppers and broccoli. You can also pick up a box at a collection point after ordering your box of fresh produce from Highgrove online.
